My Favorite Holiday Movie Playlist
Watching movies is one of my favorite things to do. It’s a pasttime that I developed as a child when my mom would take me every weekend to rent 3 movies at Blockbuster Videos (am I dating myself?). And as the temperatures get cooler and the days become shorter, there is nothing like snuggling up on the sofa under a furry blanket while sipping some hot chocolate (or eating popcorn) and enjoying a good holiday movie with my husband and my favorite furry buddy. This is why I’m sharing a few of my favorite holiday movies with you!
The Family Stone
This is one of the holiday movies that starts to get airtime earlier in the season. There are even times when it comes on as early as October. And boy am I all the way here for it! It has an all-star cast—SJP, Diane Keaton, Claire Danes, Rachel McAdams. What more could you want? Even though I am totally on SJP’s side the entire time, there is something so endearing with the dynamics of all the characters in this movie.
A Christmas Story
This movie is one of my earliest introductions to American Christmas. As a Filipino immigrant child, I thought “this must be how Americans experience Christmas—there’s gift giving, there’s turkey, there’s snow!!!”. It’s impossible to avoid this movie during the holiday season—there’s even a 24-hour marathon of the movie every year. I triple dog dare you to try and get through the end of the year without seeing A Christmas Story.
The oddest thing about this movie is that neither one of the leading ladies have ever attained true leading lady status in Hollywood. In fact, I wouldn’t be uncomfortable with saying that the men, Jack Black and Jude Law, are bigger stars than their female counterparts. Which isn’t to take away anything from Cameron Diaz or Kate Winslett. Their adventures as they switch lives is fun and heartwarming to watch. And those scenes of the English countryside is what Christmas dreams are made of! Unless your Christmas dreams involve lots of sun but this movie has that too!
Christmas with the Kranks
I love this movie. This movie is as hilarious as it is heartwarming. The scene where Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis get tans is absolutely ridiculous. So is the scene when Jamie Lee Curtis is trying to buy canned ham. And the scenes involving Frosty. But the movie also has a message about generosity and the importance of relationships.
This movie is probably the quintessential holiday movie of the millennial generation. It’s an ensemble cast of a gajillion people you’ve seen in other movies. Part of the fun is realizing where you’ve seen these actors before. Harry Potter? Gavin and Stacey? Sherlock? If you have no idea what I’m talking about, watch the movie and find out!
I’m going to stop at five in this list. Otherwise, I may end up writing a novel. What holiday movies are on your playlist? Give me some ideas in the comment section!
